Owner/Partner Vander Plaat Funeral Home with his son. In 1993 and 1994 the funeral home was honored to serve the Nixon family on the deaths of Pat and then President Richard Nixon.  

 - Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church - member, usher, past deacon and elder and vice president of council.  Also was a youth leader and has taken high school students on mission trips to Cary, Mississippi to work with the Cary Christian Center during spring break. Most Halloweens you'll find Bill driving an 18 wheeler to Mississippi along with other members of the church to bring truck loads of supplies to the Cary Thrift store.  
 - Wyckoff Fire Department - volunteer since 1973 following in his fathers' (Co.#2) and father in law's (Co.#1) footsteps.  Served as President of the Protection Fire Co.#1. and trustee. In 1978 he was presented with the Seaman Memorial Award Unit Citation by Box 54 Club for rescuing a woman out of a burning building on Pathway Manor.  
Bill was an intergral part of the construction and completion of the Wyckoff Fallen Firefighters Memorial at Co. #1 where each year, on 9/11, those who were lost are honored.  He echoes the words that "We must never forget".
His 2 sons and son in law have followed on as members of Wyckoff Fire Dept. and North Haledon Fire Dept.

 - Past member of the Wyckoff Zoning Board of Adjustment
 - Past Chairman of the Eastern Chirstian Children's Retreat Fair
 - Past member of the Wyckoff Lions Club
 - Member of the Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce
 - Member of New Jersey State Funeral Directors Assoc., Bergen County Funeral Directors Assoc. where he served as President in 2001-2002.  
 -Member of The International Order of the Golden Rule where he presently serves as President.  In 2010 he was honored with the Golden Light Award by his peers, which is the highest award given to an individual for their professional and community service by the OGR membership.

Married Linda in 1973 and they have 3 children.  Their oldest son, Tim and his wife Lori live in Wyckoff and he is a partner with Bill in the Vander Plaat Funeral Home.  They have 2 children, Ryan and Victoria.  Daughter Jackie and her husband Dean live in North Haledon. Jackie is a paramedic for St. Joseph's Hospital. They have 2 children, Billy and Kristen.  Son Kelly and his wife Becky live in Warwick, NY due to Kelly being on the FDNY.  They have 3 Children, Jocelyn, Chase and Charlotte, who are twins.  

Bill has been instrumental in developing a Memorial Tree of Remembrance Service each December where families the funeral home has served gather to pay tribute to their loved ones and receive an ornament in remembrance to hang on their Christmas tree.  Last year over 200 people attended this service at the Advent Lutheran Church.   

The motto of the International Order of the Golden Rule is to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".  Bill encourages and prays for each of his children and grandchildren to not only do the best that they can do, but also to follow the golden rule. It's his lifestyle. God has truly blessed our family.

Attended and graduated from Morris Catholic High School, County College of Morris and The American Academy McAllister of Funeral Service.  She became a New Jersey State licensed funeral director in 1998.  Erica is currently the Secretary of the Morris County Funeral Director's Association and a member of the 200 Club of Morris County.  Erica joined the Vander Plaat Funeral Home in 2013 as a director.
